FCC Construcción shares the video of Vulnerables from the Adecco Foundation

FCC Construcción, on the occasion of the day of disability, shares the video "Vulnerables" from the Adecco Foundation. Who hasn't felt vulnerable this year? Pablo Pineda, Desirée Vila and María Petit felt vulnerable in 2020, but it is a feeling that they already knew before, 4 million people with disabilities in Spain already knew it before.

Knowing that you have Down syndrome and that this means that you are "different" from other children your age; know that you will not see again due to a traffic accident with 17 years; or knowing that you will not compete as a gymnast again because your leg is amputated at the age of 16. Pablo, Maria and Desi felt vulnerable, a lot. But with the help of their environment and the conviction that there are no limits capable of stopping a person struggling for a dream, they were able to overcome and turn their disability into an impulse to improve their lives. They are only 3 examples, but there are 4 million people in their situation in our country.

Since the start of the pandemic, the hiring of people with disabilities has fallen by 29%, placing them again at the center of vulnerability in the labor market. This decline represents the first setback on the path to equality since 2012, a disadvantage of more than one point compared to the drop in general hiring.

FCC Construcción signs the Manifesto Foundations of Equality

FCC Construcción has signed the Manifesto for equal opportunities for a more sustainable and competitive construction sector.

The key factors that explain the benefits of a profession based on diversity and equality are better overall performance, competitive advantage, better economic results, plurality of perspectives, greater customer satisfaction, improved performance of projects with social impact, greater creativity.

Data from the Labor Force Survey (EPA) show that only 8.4 of the professionals in the sector are women. The year 2019 closed with 6.9% fewer women working in the sector, while the percentage of men increased by 1%. Women employed in the sector have a very remarkable training, with a Higher Education level of 66%. Regarding the positions they occupy, it is striking that 52% of them are administrative, accounting or financial.

According to the EJE & CON report "Good Practices for the management of talent and competitiveness of companies", 83% of companies in the industry and construction sector admit that they have none or have less than 10% women in their boards of directors, which places this sector in last place in terms of participation of women on boards. Regarding the number of women in senior management, it is below 10% in 67% of the companies participating in the study.

Due to its varied business structure, the construction sector is the second largest generator of employment in Spain after agriculture.

The new impulse of the sector, based on the rehabilitation sustained In the next few years, digitization and industrialization of our housing stock will be one of the main levers for the economic recovery of our country, generating quality, stable and sustainable employment.

Therefore, professionals in the real estate and construction and building sectors in Spain undertake:

  • Make the construction sector more attractive and modern for the incorporation of young women based on new trends in design and execution production processes based on digitization and industrialization.
  • Link the sector with the commitment to sustainability and the circular economy as a pending, necessary challenge and an opportunity for employment and development and innovation, to attract women towards the beginning of their professional career in the sector, promoting quality employment and with future.
  • Achieve the commitment of companies and entities in the sector to develop gender diversity policies, including the promotion of women to managerial positions.
  • Promote mentoring programs so that women can assume leadership roles in organizations.
  • Promote gender equality in the sector and communicate good practices to achieve gender equality
  • Guarantee transparency and fair remuneration to achieve equal pay between the sexes
  • Promote work-life balance policies, as part of the general objective of health and well-being, and support diverse professional development
  • Develop transparent, fair, inclusive and impartial recruitment and employment processes

People with intellectual disabilities will have increasing autonomy when making decisions

In the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, it was established, in its article 12, the recognition of equality as a person before the law, which says that all persons have legal capacity, that is, that persons with disabilities have the right to make decisions and exercise their rights like the rest of the people.

Faced with this situation, Spain is obliged to reform the Civil Code and recognize the rights established by the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The preliminary draft is a proposal to change the law, in which it is expected to modify the laws on the judicial incapacitation of people with disabilities so that they have increasing autonomy when making decisions, respecting their wishes and preferences as much as possible.

That is why the figure of the guardian, the extended parental authority and the rehabilitated parental authority will begin to be eliminated, replacing them mainly by the conservatorship, the de facto guardian and the judicial defender. The idea is that the person with a disability can make their own decisions and that the guardian intervenes as support only when strictly necessary. This is also intended to avoid conflicts of interest that may arise in guardianships.

The draft bill that is expected to reach Congress before the end of the year, has been drawn up by the Spanish Association of Tutelary Foundations and Plena Inclusión. We leave you here in easy reading the questions and answers about The Reform of the Civil Code on Disability and Guardianship.

You can also listen to the podcast of our Radio Gigantes Program in which the team that carries out the program raises its doubts about the preliminary project to professionals of the Spanish Association of Tutelage Foundations.

And if you want more information about it, we also leave you two articles on the matter in our Blog and in the newspaper El País.

Diversity, a value that adds up to FCC

  • Corporate diversity responds to the set of different talents that are necessary for the optimal functioning of a company. This is how FCC understands it, which recognizes and defends the identity, uniqueness and dignity of all the people who make up its stakeholders. In this way, the #DiversidadSuma in the company.

Gustavo and Fátima are part of the group of FCC Ambassadors on disability matters. Gustavo is head of administration in central services at FCC Construcción. He has worked for the company for 23 years and, as he himself describes it, his job consists of facilitating the day-to-day life of many colleagues who need his help. He is the father of two children, Daniel and Adrián. Daniel, 14, has a disability that has not prevented him from being like any other child his age. Gustavo experiences disability through his son and assures that "although it is not a situation you are looking for, once it comes into your life you have to try to see it in the best possible way". Gustavo feels "the luckiest person in the world" for his family and for Daniel, a boy who has taught them to value the little things in life.

For her part, Fátima Moliterni is a technical forestry engineer and since 2002 she works at Matinsa, where she is the project manager. Six people work with Fatima, four of whom have disabilities. As she herself affirms, she coordinates a great work team in which diversity is the protagonist, which favors decision-making. And not only that, but it increases the talent of the teams.

This FCC Ambassadors program, of which Gustavo and Fátima are part, is carried out with the collaboration of the Adecco Foundation and integrates employees with disabilities, employees who have children with disabilities and / or managers who have people with disabilities in their teams. The objective is to promote a positive view of disability and support for diversity and inclusion as fundamental values for FCC.

The initiative is part of the work that FCC, and the Construction area in particular, has been developing for years in favor of promoting ethical principles and values, as well as the implementation of programs, internal procedures and positive measures aimed at creating an atmosphere of work that promotes respect between people, equal opportunities for women and men and the integration of diversity.

Diversity adds

A whole philosophy that is included in the claim 'Diversity adds up' and whose values are the commitment to equality, the same opportunities, balance and a culture based on equality.

Thus, the company promotes actions and programs to promote equality, l to diversity and labor integration in a proactive way to contribute to the well-being of the people who are part of the Construction Area. With their involvement, they also strengthen ties with the communities they serve.

The company has a training plan that includes programs on equality and diversity, both for the staff in general, and for those people who, due to specific needs, must implement the policies in the organization, such as the staff that make up the Equality Commission .

In November 2008, the Equality Plan was launched, the first in the sector. Its main objective was the application of measures that allow an organizational environment that respects diversity and eradicates discrimination in any workplace. Two of the main leading companies of the Construction Area, FCC Industrial and FCC Construcción, have received the 'Distinctive of Equality in the Company' (DIE), a mark of excellence granted by the Government and that recognizes companies that stand out in the development of equality policies between women and men.

Cooking to develop creativity

A few weeks ago in Barcelona we carried out a cooking activity for 10 children and young people from the Plan Familia program, divided into teams to make two recipes: a fruit cake and a spelled sponge cake with carrot and apple, using unrefined sugars in little quantity and letting your imagination fly to create different fruit designs.

This activity has not only contributed to improving eating habits, but we have also been able to work on motor skills in beneficiaries with mobility difficulties in the hands and arms, we have motivated curiosity and interest in fruits that they had not been encouraged to try before and, above all, everything, we have promoted teamwork and the development of their creativity.

Laia, an adult beneficiary of the program, has contributed to the success of the activity and has put all her enthusiasm into the activity. Thanks to a brief training with our consultants, she helped to energize the activity, being an experience that has given her security to start in the world of work.

The Once Foundation recognizes the work of FCC Construcción as an entity committed to disability

The Once Foundation has recognized FCC Construcción's commitment to improving the quality of life of people with disabilities and their families.

In addition to FCC Construcción, Fundación Once recognized the work of companies such as: ILUNION Capital Humano, Legalitas, Fundación Ibercaja, Fundación Talgo, Banco Sabadell, Mastercard, Citi, Ford España, Banco Santander, Fundación Parques Reunidos, Campofrío Food Group, Samsung, P&G, Alsa, BBVA,, Cofares, Microsoft and EVO Banco, among others.

In 2019, more than 9,600 people with disabilities got a job outside the ONCE Social Group and about 4,000 more within it, 16% young people and 42% women.

In the area of employment, it is key for the ONCE Foundation, helping more than a thousand women who are victims of gender violence every year, either with training or with a job.

For FCC Construcción, diversity must be approached strategically to integrate it into the company, creating inclusive business models that reflect the diversity and plurality of the communities in which it operates. For all these reasons, the construction area of the FCC Group is working to strengthen its diversity strategy, and it is doing so internally, carrying out an analysis of processes and models for the selection and management of human resources; identifying unconscious biases, corporate barriers, underrepresented social groups and opportunities to generate a profound cultural change that is integrated into the corporate model of the company.

The entire project can be viewed through the website www.enpositivofcc.com The website's mission is to promote the social and labor inclusion of people at risk of exclusion (people with disabilities, women victims of gender violence, etc.).

We launched our IX Disability and Family Report

Within the framework of International Family Day and, thanks to all the families who responded to the questionnaire that we asked you during the month of April, we present the Disability and Family report for the ninth consecutive year.

Given the unusual situation that we are going through, this year the analysis has focused on the COVID-19 crisis, a turning point that, predictably, will change many paradigms, being that of the social and labor inclusion of people with disabilities one of the most relevant.

You can read the main conclusions here: Disability and Family Report.
